The Jackson Zoological Park has been a leading family attraction for people across the state and beyond for over 90 years. Boasting an animal collection representing over 200 species, 24 of which are in very sophisticated breeding programs named (SSP) Species Survival Plan, to boost their threatened populations. The museum includes a Heritage Center that tells the history of agriculture in Mississippi through artifacts related to agriculture and forestry. The museum also includes a model railroad exhibit, the National Agricultural Aviation Museum, the 4-H Learning Center and Museum and a 1920s Small Town Mississippi. The Mississippi Children's Museum is an imaginative and interactive nearly 40,000 square foot space featuring five exciting and educational galleries that encourage children to learn through play. Open Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sundays from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The museum takes children on a journey through the worlds of science and technology, cultural arts, literacy, health and nutrition and Mississippi heritage. Visitors to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science can always expect to have a unique experience and learn something new about nature. A 2,500 square foot temporary exhibit area allows the Museum to showcase exciting special exhibits throughout the year. The Museum also has a series of life-sized displays that give a comprehensive sense of Mississippi's diverse habitats, along with an understanding of the relationships that exist among the state's land, plants, animals and people. A 100,000-gallon aquarium system houses over 200 living species of native fish, reptiles, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates. A 1,700-square-foot greenhouse called "The Swamp," with another 20,000-gallon aquarium, provides a home for alligators, turtles, fish and a lush native plant garden. 2.5 miles of nature trails and native plant gardens are enjoyed year round.

Operated by the City of Jackson, this civic center and art gallery is housed in one of the oldest Mississippi landmarks in downtown Jackson, dating back to the 1860's. Dedicated to promoting local contemporary artists, it features the work of up-and-coming Mississippi artisans. The permanent collection includes the works of Andrew Bucci, Karl Wolfe and Marie Hull. The Greek Revival-style cottage, The Oaks, was built about 1853 on four acres of urban farmstead. Also known as the Boyd House, it was the home of the James Hervey Boydfamily for more than 100 years. Mr. Boyd was mayor of Jackson four times and alderman for many terms, including the year 1863 when Jackson was burned by Union forces. For a glimpse of middle-class life in the years 1853- 63, come to The Oaks House, with its cistern, dairy and garden, and site of original detached kitchen, privy and stable.

The Old Capitol Museum interprets the distinguished history of the building that was Mississippi's statehouse from 1839 to 1903. Located a stones throw away from the state capitol, Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center is a wonderful edifice which holds the history of African American culture in Mississippi. Housed in the first public school for African American boys and girls, Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center has been in operation since 1984. Founded in 1944, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra is the state's largest professional performing arts organization.
